NO. 18 MARK BARRON

Alabama senior safety

Why he's No. 18: This fast, hard-hitting safety is one of the best defensive players in college football — a preseason All-America pick who is considered one of the favorites to win the Jim Thorpe Award (he was a Thorpe semifinalist last season). Barron is equally strong against the run and the pass, and he's an intimidating presence in what should be a greatly improved Alabama secondary in 2011.

Key number: 26. That's the number of games Barron has started for the Tide. For his career, he's totaled a whopping 169 tackles. He led Alabama in tackles last season with 75.

Fun fact: The Florida Gators can attest to what kind of player Barron is. In last season's Tide rout of the Gators (31-6), Barron put together perhaps the best game of his career. He sacked John Brantley once, broke up two of his passes and recorded 11 tackles in his all-over-the-field performance.
