While Florida Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel is undergoing treatment for a potentially debilitating disease called Guillain Barre Syndrome, he asks that any cards or gifts of encouragement be made to Desire Street Ministries rather than to him personally.
Desire Street Ministries, a nonprofit, faith-based organization with which Wuerffel works said in a statement Wednesday that the former quarterback contracted the disorder from a stomach virus.
Spokeswoman Sara Pace said Wuerffel initially was hospitalized in Montgomery, Ala., and later transferred to Birmingham, but is now receiving outpatient treatment at a location that the family would like to remain private. He expects to make a full recovery.
The syndrome occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks parts of the nervous system.
“Fortunately, an early diagnosis identified the disease, permitting swift medical treatment,” DSM board chair Luder Whitlock said. “Consequently, his GBS specialist expects a full recovery.
“Meanwhile, Danny has asked me to express his appreciation for the prayers, love and support he has received during this time.”
Periodic progress reports will be posted on his message page at www.desirestreet.org and on Facebook (www.facebook.com/desirestreet).
