When University of Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis took the job with Florida earlier this year, he said the move was based largely on family.

Part of that included having a place in northern Marion County for his wife, Maura, who enjoys horses and riding.

On May 17, the Weises purchased a 10.5-acre spread in Reddick that is ready for horses. The property, located near Interstate 75, sold for $1.1 million, according to records on file with the Marion County Clerk of Courts.

The property includes a 4,041-square-foot home and a 6,336-square-foot horse barn.

Jack McDonald, who lives nearby, was excited to hear about his new neighbor.

"We saw that someone was building a big, beautiful home just down the road and I was kidding around that it was probably Charlie. We knew he wanted to live in the area. But now knowing he's going to be right across the street from me, it's wonderful," McDonald said. "We're just sparrows among eagles."

McDonald, who used to breed and show miniature horses, is a big Gator fan.

"I guess I'll have to go over there and tell him how to coach the team," he joked. "Seriously, we'll let them settle in before we welcome them to the area. His wife is quite a horse person."

Maura Weis' love of horses grew as she learned more about her daughter's developmental problems.

Their daughter, Hannah, 16, inspired the Weises to found Hannah and Friends, a nonprofit organization that operates a 40-acre farm in Indiana where residents and visitors can interact with a variety of animals, including horses. The farm also includes housing for adults with special needs.

Charlie Weis served as Notre Dame head coach from December 2004 through 2009. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets and the New England Patriots of the NFL.

Between his jobs at Notre Dame and Florida, Weis was offensive coordinator last season for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Weis, who could not be reached for comment, recently told a Sports Illustrated writer that he could see Marion County as part of his long-term plans.

"I could see myself retiring in Ocala. … I'm buying. Not renting," he said.
