A suspect in a Georgia slaying was arrested in Alachua County early Wednesday. The arrest was made within hours of the discovery of a homicide victim just across the state line.
Officials in Lowndes County, Ga., and Alachua County said Lucas Alvarado-Santiago, 30, was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Park, Ga., five miles from the Florida state line along Interstate 75.
Lowndes County investigators sent out an alert to agencies in Florida asking them to be on the lookout for Alvarado-Santiago. Investigators in Lowndes County said they had information he was from the Tampa area and likely was headed back there following the shooting.
Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies said they spotted Alvarado-Santiago at a gas station at the County Road 236 interchange on I-75, just north of Alachua. He was arrested without incident, sheriff’s spokesman Art Forgey said, and booked into the Alachua County jail to await extradition to Georgia on a murder charge.
