Preseason No. 1's not a good bet for BCS title game

We're not that far away from the first preseason polls to be released and this much we know — the team ranked at the top is not a good bet to make the national title game.

The last time the AP and coaches' polls had the pre-season No. 1 make it to the championship game was on 2006 when Ohio State did it. Since then, not so good.

In 2007, both has Southern Cal No. 1. In 2008, it was Georgia. In 2009, the mighty Gators. In 2010, Alabama was picked to repeat.

Here's a look at the last five years, championships all won by SEC teams, and where each of the finalists was ranked in the preseason.


Florida - 8th in Coaches, 7th in AP

Ohio State - 1st in Coaches, 1st in AP


LSU - 2nd in Coaches, 2nd in AP

Ohio State - 10th in Coaches, 11th in AP


Florida - 4th in Coaches, 5th in AP

Oklahoma - 5th in Coaches, 4th in AP


Alabama - 5th in Coaches, 5th in AP

Texas - 2nd in Coaches, 2nd in AP


Auburn - 23rd in Coaches, 22nd in AP

Oregon - 11th in Coaches, 11th in AP
