Public ATV trails to open next week

ATV riders will have access to 38 miles of public trails next week. The Suwannee River Water Management District will open the trails in the Mallory Swamp tract on April 9.

The trails will remain open to ATVs only during daylight hours and only until Sept. 11. Then the trails will be closed to ATVs for the hunting season.

“The trails feature plenty of open space and the opportunity to ride alongside nature,” said Edwin McCook, the district's land management specialist.

Riders are reminded of the safety regulations for the area, which include:

* All persons operating an ATV are required to have a daily special-use authorization in their possession while riding. SUAs are available at the ATV parking area kiosk.

* Riders 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is required to sign the SUA.

* Riders must stay on designated trails and obey posted speed limits.
