A cooperative grocery store for locally produced food is nearing completion, but first the Citizens Co-op is trying to raise the last bit of funding it needs to open.
After three years of planning, the co-op has raised more than $200,000 from 700 members and co-owners, but it needs a little more for refrigeration and storage equipment, additional staff and other details, organizers said.
The co-op has turned to the website kickstarter.com, giving itself until April 23 to raise $15,000.
As of Friday, Citizens Co-op had 49 backers pledging $2,747 of the needed $15,000.
Finance Manager Gretchen McIntyre said renovations to a building at 435 S. Main St. will be complete by April 15 “and one way or another we will have a store open shortly after.”
Interested people can also help by becoming co-op members, purchasing investor shares or purchasing prepaid shopping cards.
