MIAMI — U.S. Marshals have captured a man in Florida who has been on the run from a drug case for 31 years.

A Marshals spokesman says 62-year-old Mark Steven Phillips was arrested Thursday in West Palm Beach. Phillips skipped out on bail in November 1979 in the middle of his Miami trial on racketeering and marijuana trafficking charges. A jury convicted him of both counts even though he had fled.

Over the years authorities say Phillips used assumed names in Germany and Chile. He returned to Florida last year and began using his real name. Marshals found him Thursday at a West Palm Beach apartment.

Court records did not list an attorney for Phillips. He had worked as a yacht broker in Fort Lauderdale prior to his criminal prosecution.
