PENSACOLA, Fla. — The owner of two Mexican restaurants is heading to jail for five years after a foiled scheme to fake his death.
Senior U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson sentenced 45-year-old Ismeal Rodriguez on Tuesday. Rodriguez and his wife, 41-year-old Maria Rodriguez, were found guilty of mail fraud and fraud charges in November. She will be sentenced Feb. 11.
Authorities say Rodriguez took out $2 million in life insurance policies between 2002 and 2006. In 2008, the couple traveled to Mexico where Maria Rodriguez said her husband was kidnapped and murdered. Records show she contacted the insurance company in December 2008.
The judge ordered Ismael to pay $4,645 in restitution and $1,200 in fines.
