ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ace the police dog will stay with his fallen partner's family if St. Petersburg officials have their way.
St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster said Tuesday the children of Officer Jeffrey A. Yaslowitz have suffered enough loss. He doesn't want them to lose their dog, too.
Yaslowitz and Sgt. Thomas J. Baitinger were killed Monday during a shootout at a St. Petersburg home. Ace was in the officer's SUV during the shooting because the armed fugitive being sought was hiding in the attic, out of the dog's reach.
Police Chief Chuck Harmon says the officer's three children consider Ace their pet. Fellow officers are keeping a watch on the dog, who will remain with the family if it is safe for them.
