SARASOTA, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol says a 15-year-old pedestrian is dead and another teenager seriously injured after being struck by a car in Sarasota that then fled the scene.
Brenden Edward Barnes and 16-year-old Samuel Garvin were walking in a bicycle lane Saturday evening when the crash occurred. Investigators say a vehicle veered into the bicycle lane, striking the teens.
Garvin described the vehicle as a black or dark colored sport utility vehicle with damage to the right front of the car. Officials say the vehicle did not stop to help before fleeing the scene.
Barnes was killed and Garvin is being treated for injuries at Manatee Memorial Hospital.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 941-751-7647, ext. 435 or 131.
