Gainesville's unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent in December from 8.7 percent in November as a result of a declining workforce, while Florida's rate remained at 12 percent.
The number of unemployed people in Gainesville was down over the month, but so was the number of employed, the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation reported Friday.
The decline came after November's rate jumped 0.9 percent from October. The 8.3 percent rate was the same in December 2009. It was the lowest rate of 23 metro areas, along with the Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin area.
An employer survey shows that Gainesville has added 1,300 jobs from December 2009 to December 2010.
Florida's rate represents 1.1 million jobless out of a labor force of more than 9.2 million. The number of jobs was down 17,900 for the month, but up 43,500 from a year ago.
