The Civic Media Center is helping to teach the community the value of a dollar.

If you go

What: the Civic Media Center's CD and book sale
When: Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Civic Media Center, 433 S. Main St.
Cost: All CDs and books are $1

The activism center and alternative media library is selling off more than 1,200 CDs and about 50 books today — and everything is $1.

"We hope that's part of the fun for people — that they're getting a good deal out of their dollar," said Katie Walters, a co- coordinator at the center.

Walters said the goods up for grabs have a "progressive slant," including items from local artists.

The books that will be featured in the sale are either duplicates or unfit for the center's library, she said. The music selection, however, was donated from WUFT radio station.

Those attending the sale will be able to sift through CDs by rock regulars of yesteryear, including the Grateful Dead, Dave Van Ronk and the Flying Burrito Brothers.

"[The merchandise is] not just a bunch of rejects," Walters said. "It's not easily available at other places."

Profits from the sale will benefit the general operating costs of the center, and Walters said she hopes to raise $1,000. Walters said she hopes the event will encourage the community to stop by the center at 433 S. Main St.

"I'm hoping that it's going to attract people that may have heard about us but just haven't made it down before," she said, "and I'm hoping it will grab people that already have an interest in what we do and introduce us to them — and them to us."

The sale lasts from noon until 6 p.m. The center is accepting cash, checks and PayPal orders.
