A 26-year-old Gainesville mother was arrested on child abuse charges after cuts and bruises were found in several places on her 7-year-old son's body.
The child told investigators his mother had beaten him repeatedly with a belt and with a shoe, police said.
The woman, who was arrested Wednesday by Gainesville Police Department officers, is not being named by The Sun to protect the victim's identity.
Officers said the child was checked in early December for medical problems by the Child Protection Team and a few weeks later told officials about the beatings. The child said his mother beat him on his hands, legs, buttocks and face. He showed investigators a mark on his temple that he said bled after one beating, after which he cleaned it up with a paper towel, police said.
Other marks on the child included a bruise and cut around his left eye.
The boy was placed in another home and the mother booked into the Alachua County jail.
