An elderly husband and wife have died of injuries they suffered in a traffic crash in late December, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred on Dec. 30 at around 1:30 p.m. on State Road 24 at Southwest 81st Street, west of Gainesville.

FHP troopers said a 2009 Toyota sedan driving southbound on Southwest 81st Street was making a left turn to go east on State Road 24 when it turned into the path of a westbound 2001 Pontiac van.

The Toyota's driver, Aloysius G. Quinn, 91, of Melbourne, was first taken to Shands at the University of Florida and later transferred to the Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of his injuries on Tuesday evening, according to FHP.

Troopers said Quinn's wife, Lorraine D. Quinn, 90, who was a passenger during the accident, also was taken to Shands immediately after the crash. Medical staff at Shands pronounced her dead Thursday morning.

Another passenger in the Quinns' car, Maria Del Rosario Frazier, 46, of Gainesville, was taken to Shands for treatment for minor injuries.

Troopers said the Pontiac's driver, Carol Wernik Hollinshead, 76, of Williston, was taken to North Florida Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Prior to his death, Aloysius Quinn was charged with making an improper left turn.
