Emergency workers in Dixie County will respond to a simulated school bus accident with many victims on Tuesday. The mock disaster is part of ongoing emergency response training in the rural county.

Emergency Management Division Chief Scott Garner said the exercise is designed to test the plans already in place to deal with a mass casualty incident as well as to determine what additional planning may be needed.
A school bus accident was the scenario selected because there were 158 bus accidents statewide during the 2008-2009 school year. Many of the accidents involved multiple injuries and in some cases, several deaths.
“If we prepare and practice now, then we can be ready for whatever the future might hold,” Garner said.
The mock disaster will take place near the Cross City airport at the Trail Riders Club. It will feature a simulated school bus accident involving multiple patients requiring on-scene care, some who need transportation to a hospital, and students who must be reunified with their families at the scene.
