Mother Earth Market organic and natural health food stores are getting a new name as the parent company seeks to improve brand recognition for its 12 stores.
The new name -- Earth Origins Market -- is already appearing in marketing materials and will be changed on signs in six to eight weeks, said Rafael Baretto, general manager of Palm Harbor-based Natural Retail Group.
NRG owns 12 stores -- nine in Florida, two in Maryland and one in Massachusetts -- that currently operate under multiple names.
"It's hard for a customer to identity that we're all the same company," he said.
The company has been selling Earth Origins supplements since the 1990s.
The first Gainesville store opened at a co-op across from its current location at 521 NW 13th St. in the 1960s. Art Gore, who owned a small chain of natural food stores in South Florida at the time, purchased Mother Earth in 1986, opening a second location at 1237 NW 76th Blvd. in 1993, an Ocala store in 1996 and a Sarasota store in 1997. NRG acquired the stores in 1998.
