Where are the patriotic CEOs?

The Gainesville Sun front page article "Many U.S. firms are hiring, but not in the U.S." tells a story about greed on the part of some American industries and businesses.

Companies such as Caterpillar Inc. seem more interested in their own profits and production facilities in foreign countries than they are in fostering job production and growth in the U.S.

Where is the patriotism of the executives of such countries? I can't believe that they are purposely trying to decrease manufacturing and job growth in the U.S. but that is what they are doing.

Our government should be meeting with the executives of companies encouraging them to produce their products locally to preserve American jobs.

He can't manage his money or our money

In regard to The Sun's article about Rodney Long and his problem with his American Express Card:

During his time on the County Commission Long has received a business loan he was not really qualified for, made payments on personal debts with it instead of using it for his business, went into default with property he was buying and now defaulted on his payments to American Express.

This is the man we put in charge of the many millions of dollars for our county budget. He can't manage his own money and he doesn't do a very good job with ours.

Voters need to take note, ask questions of the next candidates and put someone different on the commission. We need someone who can manage his own affairs and who we can trust with the larger needs of the county.

Time to abolish the state death penalty

Are you aware that Florida has 398 people on death row waiting to be executed?

The death penalty often takes a back seat to taxes and recession, yet lives hang in the balance. Florida has the shameful record of freeing 23 innocent persons from death row. This is more than any other state.

Some say that this means the system works. I assert that the system is broken to have put that number and probably more innocent people on death row.

How many innocent people has Florida killed?

It is time that Florida abolishes the death penalty and uses the millions of dollars it will save to help the victims of violent crime. To check the facts yourself go to www.deathpenaltyinfo.org.

Too many bowls

I remember when the Rose Bowl was "It." With no TV then, we gathered in a local movie theater to hear a radio broadcast of the game and watch a chart showing where the ball was and who had it. We cheered and moaned for our team, the Crimson Tide.

Are you bored with about 38 different college football bowls now? They have names such as: Maaco Bowl; Pizza Bowl; Insight Bowl; Pinstripe Bowl; GoDaddy Bowl; Compass Bowl; Fight Hunger Bowl. I suppose bowl games bring business to sponsors.

Please, no more new bowls!

Short and sweet: Thanks, Urban

I will keep it short and sweet. Urban Meyer, the Gators have had winning coaches before but you have won more than just national championships, you have won our hearts.

Good luck to you, we wish you all the best. The Gator Nation is honored to have had you in our family.
