North Florida Regional Medical Center has earned a five-star rating for maternity care from HealthGrades, the nation's leading independent health care ratings company.
The rating is basked on clinical performance in a number of areas. HealthGrades rated 1,546 hospitals with one to five stars based on four factors: maternal complication rate in all deliveries, maternal complication rate among women choosing to undergo a Caesarian section, newborn volume adjusted for low birth weight and newborn mortality rate in eight birth weight categories.
Top-performing, five-star hospitals tended to have a higher delivery volume with fewer complications for mothers, according to the HealthGrades study.
The Women's Center at NFRMC sees about 200 births in its New Beginnings maternity unit each month. In 2009, 2,597 births were reported, according to hospital data. Final figures for 2010 are not yet available.
