TAMPA — Although nothing will be official until after the Outback Bowl game today, it appears that former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis could become the next offensive coordinator at Florida for new coach Will Muschamp.

Sources have told The Gainesville Sun and other media outlets, including ESPN, have reported that Weis is Muschamp's target to install a pro-style offense that would help attract big-time recruits.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Weis is expected to take the job, but a deal is not in place.

Weis, hired at Notre Dame five years ago when Urban Meyer turned the Irish down to come to Florida, is the offensive coordinator at Kansas City. The Chiefs are headed to the playoffs and ESPN reported Weis would remain with the team until the Chiefs are eliminated. Although recruiting cranks back up Tuesday and Weis would not be available to go on the road, other UF assistants could use the hiring of Weis as a lure to offensive players. And Weis could make phone calls to recruits.

Two weeks ago, Mortenson reported that Weis might not be back at Kansas City and could be replaced by Josh McDaniels, who coached Matt Cassel in New England.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley says he has no knowledge of Weis possibly taking a similar job with UF.

Haley said Friday he was “unaware of anything.”

“It would be news to me,” Haley said.

Weis won three Super Bowl rings in New England and the Chiefs reached the playoffs in his first year there. Kansas City currently ranks ninth in the NFL in offense. At Notre Dame, Weis started fast with 17 wins in two seasons but was fired last year after accumulating a 35-27 record.

Meyer, who has a close relationship with New England coach Bill Belichick, told The Sun earlier this week he has been in constant contact with Muschamp since he was hired. Weis was Belichick's offensive coordinator at New England.

Weis was not available to reporters.

In other news, ESPN’s Bruce Feldman is reporting that Miami wide receivers coach Aubrey Hill, a former Gator wide receiver, will also join Muschamp’s staff.
