The Gainesville Sun and Ocala Star-Banner's first ever Holiday Cookie Contests drew more than 100 entries in both cities combined. Readers sent us everything from new and exciting recipes to those with heartwarming tales about how they'd been passed down through generations.

Judges in each city had the envious job of selecting one overall winner -- and it was no easy task.

In Gainesville, it was a recipe for Cinnamon Stars from Sarah Waters, a student in Eastside High School's Institute of Culinary Arts, that won over the judges. It was creative, delicious and beautiful.

In Ocala, the winning recipe was for Scottish Shortbread Yule Logs, an altered family recipe by Lisa Cook of Ocala. Judges called them decadent and delicious.

It is our hope that this contest will become something of a holiday tradition in homes across North Central Florida. In the meantime, there's still time to celebrate the 2010 Christmas and Hanukkah season with something sweet.

Happy Holidays!
