A state board has awarded $2 million in grants to state universities, including $600,000 to the University of Florida.

The Florida Board of Governors announced the awards Friday. The money comes from a state appropriation for turning inventions into commercial products.

UF received $175,000 for a project involving ingestible wireless sensors attached to pills, $175,000 for a nanotechnology project, $170,000 for a fuel-cell project and $80,000 for a gas sensor intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution.

The Florida Technology, Research and Scholarship Board selected the projects and 17 others at a recent meeting, choosing them out of 45 submissions.
