Lubavitch-Chabad Jewish Student and Community Center and Hillel at the University of Florida will be holding a variety of events starting Wednesday in honor of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Both student centers will be holding events for the first and second evening and morning of Rosh Hashanah as well as events for Yom Kippur.
Rabbi Berl Goldman stressed that the events at Chabad are open to Jews and non-Jews.
“Our motto is labels are for suits. You don't have to be a particular sort of person,” Goldman said.
Chabad's ceremony will mention its opposition to the Dove World Outreach Center's planned Quran burning.
Goldman said they plan to focus their energy toward stopping the event.
“Hopefully through prayers and good deeds, they won't even go through with their plans,” he said.
Chabad will be holding a free service and dinner Wednesday night and Thursday night. They will have a waterfront service at Lake Alice at 5 in the evening on Thursday. Goldman said Chabad has 400 reservations and expects at least 500 people to show up for tonight's event.
Hillel, meantime, will be offering different services for conservative and reform practices, as well as an alternative Rosh Hashanah celebration called “Let's Get High,” in honor of the high holidays.
“Let's Get High,” is meant as a more interactive, out-of-the-box event, as opposed to the more traditional services offered.
“Every service has its own room,” said Jessica Davis, program director at Hillel.
Hillel will also host events Wednesday night and Thursday for the first and second days of Rosh Hashanah, as well as events for Yom Kippur. There will be a casting of sins at the Reitz Union pond at 4:30 Thursday afternoon.
