Tebow scrambling to tune in

Tim Tebow is bummed.

Not because of his botched snap on his first play Thursday night.

Not because of the interception he threw against Minnesota.

Tim Tebow is bummed because he can't watch Johnny Brantley on Saturday.

"We have meetings (this morning) and a little practice," Tebow told The Sun. "I don't have a house yet and there's no DVR in my hotel. I have to figure out some way to get my brother Robbie to tape it. Or maybe one of the Broncos video guys get me a tape. But I have to see it. I'm more excited about that game than I am my own game."

Denver doesn't play until next Sunday but Tebow's former team plays on Saturday against Miami of Ohio. Tebow has been a mentor to Brantley and can't wait to see what the current UF quarterback does this season, starting with the opener.

"I tell you, when I get a house I'm going to get the college football package and everything," Tebow said. "It is a little weird that Florida will play a game and I'm not going to see it or be part of it. I'm very excited about it. I've been talking to the coaches a lot. I talked to J.B. for awhile the other night. He's such a good kid.

"We talked about everything. We talked about how different it is in this league compared to college. We talked about his game plan for Miami of Ohio. We talked about what he can expect. I wish I could see the game."

But Tebow has his own responsibilities now as a backup quarterback with the Broncos. He has already seen a lot in the NFL, throwing a pair of touchdown passes in the preseason and suffering an injury in his first NFL game.

He has also seen his jersey sales go through the roof and his popularity grow instead of wane in the NFL.

"Some of it is surprising to see all these people wanting jerseys and wanting me to sign stuff," he said. "I'm really blessed. It's very humbling."

College Timmy has become Corporate Tim with a big contract and numerous endorsement deals. But he insists he's the same guy who wowed fans and made friends in Gainesville and Jacksonville in college and high school.

"I'm just trying to handle everything on my plate and there is a lot on my plate," he said. "I just want to be who I am. I tried to do that in high school and at Florida. Sometimes things can be so complicated so you just have to take it back to the simplest form. I'm trying to do the same thing here."

As a player, Tebow has remained a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Most of the criticism was directed at him after his injury. Critics pointed out that he can't run the ball in the NFL the way he did in college because players are bigger and faster. Forget that players such as Steve Young scrambled to Super Bowls.

In fact, Tebow scrambled for a big first down on Thursday night.

"I do have to be smart about it," he said. "But I have to be myself. It's my nature and I can't get away from that. I feel like I've made some strides here. I just keep trying not to make the same mistake twice."

Like not having the equipment to tape on Saturday's game.
