Top cop explains new anti-crime plan

The reorganization of the Gainesville Police Department - aimed at getting more officers on the street to reduce the crime rate - was explained by Chief Tony Jones to the North Central Florida chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators on Wednesday.

In addition to reducing crime, Jones said he believes the reorganization will result in improved community relations and a more efficient operation.

Jones announced the changes late last year, and they took effect in January.

Jones also discussed a recently completed assessment of juvenile crime in Alachua County, a subject that Jones said is near and dear to him. He is associated with the Reichert House, a program for youths who need assistance transitioning from teens to adults.

Forum members questioned Jones on the involvement of psychologists in police hiring, a police advisory board that is being formed and the degree to which the police department and the community are working together now.

Jones is a career GPD employee who was hired as chief last year following a period of tumult in the department stemming from a string in incidents involving illegal or improper police behavior.

The National Forum for Black Public Administrators aims to strengthen the position of blacks in public administration, increase the number of blacks appointed to executive positions in public service organizations and to groom and prepare younger administrators for senior public management posts.
