A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on kidnapping and sexual assault charges in connection with an alleged attack a week ago.
Collis Leopold Dennison, 28, of 6604 S.W. 63rd Lane, was charged with sexual assault and kidnapping and booked into the Alachua County jail.
According to a report filed by Alachua County sheriff's Deputy Drew Evan Moore, the incident happened between 2:50 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. Jan. 21 in the 5200 block of Southwest 70th Terrace.
A 27-year-old woman told investigators she was walking through the area when she was approached by a man she did not know. The man reportedly asked her for a cigarette. The woman said the man, whom she later identified as Dennison, began talking to her about a person they both knew.
Dennison reportedly offered the woman drugs for sex. She told investigators that she turned him down and also refused his request for sex in return for cash.
According to Moore's arrest report, Dennison then tried to drag the woman into a secluded, wooded area nearby. The woman said she fought with Dennison and that, when he grabbed her from behind, she was able to redial the last number she had called on her cell phone. The woman told deputies she reached her boyfriend and was able to tell him where she was before Dennison grabbed the phone and disconnected the call.
According to the woman, Dennison had been trying to pull her clothing off, but when he grabbed her cell phone, she was able to run down Southwest 52nd Avenue. The woman's boyfriend said he drove up as Dennison was chasing the woman. The woman said Dennison stopped in front of the boyfriend's car, giving her an opportunity to grab her cell phone from him before jumping into the car.
The woman's boyfriend drove her to a relative's home where she called 911.
Moore said that during an interview at the jail Dennison denied the woman's account of the event.
