FORT SMITH, Ark. — More than 200 jobs at a Trane plant in Fort Smith would move to Florida under a plan by the plant's parent company.
Piscataway, N.J.-based Ingersoll-Rand notified union leaders at the Fort Smith plant Monday that 212 positions would move to Lynn Haven, Fla., under the proposal. Spokesman Paul Dickard says the move will help the company better utilize its plant capacity and serve the East Coast.
Dickard says the union's response will have to be "fairly compelling" for the company not to consider the move.
Officials with the United Auto Workers Local 716 were not available for comment.
The Fort Smith plant has about 415 hourly workers. The company will notify 197 hourly and 15 salaried employees of its decision on Feb. 19.
