Florida begins its quest for the College World Series with its first practice and scrimmage of the year Friday.
The full team workout is scheduled to start at about 3 p.m. at McKethan Stadium and is open to the public.
Third-year coach Kevin O’Sullivan welcomes the return 20 players from a team that was 42-22 last year and claimed the SEC’s Eastern Division title for the first time since 2005. Of the Gators’ 14 newcomers, 11 are part of a recruiting class ranked as the best in the nation by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.
“We are excited to have everyone on the field in one group,” O’Sullivan said. “With our season opener exactly three weeks from Friday, the players have been working hard in the weight room and during individual workouts to get ready.
“There is a lot of competition for spots and playing time that should help us prepare for the season opener.”
The Gators open the regular season Feb. 19 when they host South Florida for the first of a three-game series at 6:30 p.m.
