Crime analysts at the Alachua County Sheriff's Office have come across an unlikely new trend - thefts of pickup tailgates.

* Blue tailgate with black handle, stolen between 7 p.m. Jan. 19 and 12:39 a.m. Jan. 20, at 4251 S.W. 13th St., from a 2997 Chevrolet.

* Silver GMC truck tailgate, stolen between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Jan. 20, at 24220 W. Newberry Road, from a 2005 GMC.

* Red Chevrolet tailgate, stolen between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at 16100 S.E. 207th St., from a 2010 Chevrolet.

In an internal report on Monday morning, analysts noted: "Three tailgates in less than 5 days is not a coincidence. There's a market for them … where?"

The tailgates taken include two from Chevrolets and one from a GMC pickup. They were different colors - blue, silver and red - and from three different years - 2007, 2005 and 2010.

Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said the thefts have also been from three different locations, including the Lockloosa boat ramp.

"If anyone knows anything about this, we would like to hear from them," Forgey said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 955-1818.
