Power to about 7,400 Gainesville Regional Utilities customers was cut off briefly Monday afternoon.
According to GRU spokeswoman Kim Jamerson, the outage began shortly after 2 p.m. and lasted for about nine minutes. The outage was the result of routine maintenance work being done at the Depot Avenue substation.
"A piece of protective equipment tripped," Jamerson said. She said the situation was similar what happens when the ground fault circuit interrupters found in residential bathrooms trip and turn off electricity to protect anyone around them.
The outage primarily affected homes and businesses in downtown Gainesville, but also affected a section of 13th Street.
"The outage wasn't really on a straight line," Jamerson said.
There were no immediate reports of accidents or injuries directly related to the outage.
