Regretfully America has become a truly representative democracy that accurately reflects the morals and beliefs of the majority.

To continuously harp about inept government is foolish and masochistic, as we are the government. It is ludicrous to pretend government is a huge alien entity that doesn't do our bidding.

Americans knew in the late 1970s that importation of foreign oil was a major problem, but the majority didn't want to tax gasoline and find alternative fuels. Our elected representatives did as we wanted. Even when Congress noted the problem and set a 55 mph limit on the freeways, we ignored it in such numbers it became unenforceable and was rescinded.

Four dollars a gallon gas was directly our fault, but most of us whined and complained about it being the fault of Big Oil, government or environmentalists.

When I buy more house than I can afford, lose my job, run over a pothole, get tainted food from the grocer, et al, I complain mightily if government doesn't promptly respond, and they better not raise my taxes to get it done.

To paraphrase Pogo, "We have met the inept government and he is us."

Chiefland
