A Marion County man severely damaged his leg Sunday morning when he fell out of a boat on Lake Lochloosa and was run over, said Alachua County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Maynard.

The accident happened while two Ocala men were fishing off of U.S. 301 south of Hawthorne, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported.

The prop of the 18-foot, fiberglass boat had been clogged with vegetation when Johnny Johnson, 60, revved the motor to clear it, according to information from a preliminary investigation, said FWC spokeswoman Karen Parker. The boat turned sharply and Joe Brown Lane, 54, was thrown out. One of Lane’s legs was cut from the knee to the foot by the prop.

Maynard said the man was flown by helicopter to Shands at the University of Florida, where FWC reported Lane underwent surgery.

The incident occurred at about 10 a.m., Parker said.

U.S. 301 was blocked to traffic for the helicopter, Maynard said.

The matter remained under investigation by FWC late Sunday, Parker said.
