A man is expected to recover after being shot once early Wednesday in an incident that police said may have been drug-related.
Gainesville police said the shooting was reported at 2:20 a.m. in the parking lot of The Enclave, an apartment complex at 3000 S.W. 35th Place. By the time officers arrived at the scene, witnesses said the victim and the suspect had fled.
Blood and a 9mm shell casing were found at the scene and taken into evidence, according to Lt. Wayne Ash.
Investigators said some evidence at the scene led them to believe the shooting was drug-related, but they declined to elaborate.
At 3 a.m., while the search continued for a suspect and a victim, Ash said a man showed up in the emergency room at Shands at the University of Florida with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.
The man was identified as Altoany Cason.
Cason told investigators that he was confronted in the apartment complex's parking lot by a man who was concealing his face with a shirt.
Cason claimed the man pointed a silver handgun at him and demanded his money, and then the two got into a struggle.
Witnesses told police that Cason was shot at twice as he fled from the area.
A search was continuing for the alleged shooter on Wednesday afternoon.
