The theatrical concert 3 Mo' Divas has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award, and the man behind the show, Gainesville resident Marion J. Caffey, hopes his Florida roots can help his little show tackle some big stars.
In the category of recording, the nominees for outstanding group, duo or collaboration include 3 Mo' Divas, along with The Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys, Day 26 and Jay-Z again featuring Rihanna and Kanye West, all virtual giants in the music industry. Caffey's show features three women singing songs in 10 different genres and three languages.
"Honestly this is a miraculous nomination for us, we're the only group that didn't come from deep pockets and a major label," Caffey said. "We believed it, and this was an indication to us that we aren't the only believers."
In order to vote for the awards, one must be a member of the NAACP. Member will receive a ballot on which they can cast their vote for each category. Voting began today. The 41st Annual NAACP Image Awards will air live on Fox on Feb. 26.
Since the vote is limited to members only, Caffey thinks 3 Mo' Divas has a better chance to steal the award from some of the biggest names in popular music.
"We stand a chance because you won't have every kid in America who listens to Jay-Z voting," Caffey said. "I know a lot of members in Florida, and we need their support."
