A Fort White man was flown to the hospital after reportedly stabbing himself in the chest several times when he got caught stealing a pickup and other items from a relative.
Jimmy E. Spears, 31, of 652 Worryfree Glen, was flown to Shands at the University of Florida and will be charged with three counts of felony grand theft when he is released, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Edward Seifert said a resident in the 300 block of Horseshoe Loop arrived home at about 12:20 p.m. for lunch and apparently interrupted the theft of his truck, utility trailer and an all-terrain vehicle. The resident identified Spears and told deputies that it appeared he stabbed himself several times with about a four-inch long pocket knife blade before he fled from the home in the stolen truck.
Deputies Slade McCardle and Jesse Cieslik said they pulled Spears over a short distance from the home and immediately summoned paramedics. Spears was flown to the trauma unit at Shands at the University of Florida. Seifert said he is expected to survive.
The truck, trailer and ATV were returned to the owner, according to Seifert, and Spears will be arrested before he leaves the hospital.
