MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Vice President Joe Biden says the United States is firmly committed over the long term to helping Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake.
Biden spoke Monday at a South Florida prayer breakfast marking the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Biden said assistance to Haiti is growing by the day and urged Americans to continue finding ways to help.
Biden spoke at Florida Memorial University near Miami, where about 100 students are Haitian-Americans.
The vice president also met over the weekend in Miami with Haitian-American leaders and military officials helping with the relief effort at Homestead Air Reserve Base.
Biden said despite President Barack Obama's election, much more work remains on racial equality issues championed by King.
