A Gainesville woman was critically injured in a Thursday morning crash outside Branford.
Heather Lawrence, 21, was flown to Shands at the University of Florida following a wreck on U.S. 27 a half-mile west of Branford, which is just inside the Lafayette County line.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Lawrence was westbound in a 2003 Chevrolet pickup. At the same time, Timothy John Caldwell, 47, of O'Brien, was eastbound in a log truck, a 2003 Freightliner.
According to a crash report by FHP Trooper W. McGauley and Cpl. J. Berger, Lawrence's pickup crossed the center line and hit a bridge rail on the south side of the highway. The force of the impact pushed her truck into the eastbound lane. Caldwell told the troopers that he saw Lawrence's pickup and was able to apply the brakes on his semi before the left front of the pickup hit the left front of the semi. Caldwell was not injured in the crash. McGauley's written report showed that Caldwell was wearing a seat belt but Lawrence was not.
