An Oak View Middle School student in Newberry reported Thursday morning that a man in a van approached him and tried to coax him into the van, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office reported.
Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said the incident happened in the 250500 block of Newberry Road.
The student said a light-skinned black man in a gray minivan drove alongside, commented on the cold temperatures and asked the student if he wanted a ride.
The van stayed alongside the student a short distance until he got to a school crossing guard, Forgey said.
Deputies will be on patrol in the area this morning, Forgey added.
