OCALA – Ocala police detectives have identified a Gainesville man they say is connected to one robbery Tuesday; and possibly another robbery nearby.
According to Detective Matt Bos, the robber has been identified as 30-year-old Joshua Levi Head. If found, Head will be charged with robbery with a weapon.
Head is accused of robbing the CVS pharmacy at 3501 N. Pine Ave shortly before 7 p.m. He reportedly escaped with more than 100 15-milligram to 30-milligram tablets of Oxycontin.
Not long after that robbery, officers responded to Sweet Seductions, an adult video store at 2033 N. Pine Ave, at 9:37 p.m., in responce to a man robbing the business and escaping with an undetermined amount of cash.
The two businesses are roughly a mile and a half apart.
Detectives do not know if the two robberies are related, although the robber's description given by witnesses is similar: a white male, approximately 5-feet-10 to 6-feet tall, of medium build.
At CVS, officials say the man had on a gray hooded zipped-up jacket, green hat and blue jeans. He implied he had a weapon, but he did not display one.
At the adult video store, the robber had on a blue scarf that covered the bottom of his face, a blue or black beanie cap, a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. He pointed a black handgun at the owner and his girlfriend.
In the CVS incident, officers say a man entered the building and went to a pharmacy clerk and demanded Oxycontin. He placed a green bag on the counter. The clerk noticed the man's right hand was in his jacket pocket and saw a bulge.
Authorities say the clerk went to the pharmacist to get the drugs. The robber told the clerk she had a minute to give him the items. At the 30-second mark, the robber said if he did not get the drug, he would jump the counter.
After receiving the Oxycontin, he fled the store.
During their investigation, Bos got a tip that Head was the suspect.
At Sweet Seductions, owner Ronnie Speciale and his girlfriend Marlo Thomas were sitting behind the counter when a man barged in, pointed a black handgun at them and demanded all the money they had.
The couple said they opened the register and the gunman reached over and grabbed the cash. Both said he kept telling them the robbery was no joke.
"I told him to take what you want," Speciale said.
Once the gunmen fled the store, they called police. Officers searched the area, but did not find anyone.
Speciale and Thomas said the gunman was about 5-feet-10 inches tall, of medium build, around age 25 or younger and wore a scarf that covered his mouth, lips and chin.
Since he assumed ownership two years ago, Speciale said the store has been robbed twice. Thomas, who worked for the previous owner and has been there eight years, said the business has been robbed four times. She said when the store was robbed six years ago, she was beaten up by the robber.
The state's Department of Corrections Web site shows that Head recently served time for grand theft and grand theft of a motor vehicle. He also served time in the late 1990s for grand theft. He was released July 21, 2009, and is on felony probation until July 20, 2011.
