JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it's a good idea to redraw the habitat areas that protect Florida's endangered manatees, but it's too expensive.
The service's Jacksonville office posted an online notice Tuesday saying other court-ordered projects will take priority for now.
Conservation groups petitioned the wildlife service in 2008 to redraw manatee habitats for the first time in more than 30 years. The agency agreed to take a closer look in September.
Redrawing manatee habitats would have changed the level of scrutiny required for development of the areas.
