Progress Energy cut power to 14 Marion County schools this morning, leaving the schools cold and dark as students arrived for classes.
School District Spokesman Kevin Christian said the schools participate in a Progress Energy program that permits the utility to black out power temporarily when demand for electricity is very high, as it is right now. He said the utility said it would restore power to the schools by 11 a.m.
Because the district turned on the heat to the schools at 2 a.m. today, some of the schools retained some of their heat after the outage, he said.
The schools that are without power are:
Belleview Elementary, Belleview Santos Elementary, Dunnellon Middle School, Dunnellon High School. Emerald Shores Elementary, Fessenden Elementary, Greenway Elementary, Lake Weir High, North Marion Middle, North Marion High, Sparr Elementary, Stanton-Weirsdale Elementary, Forest High, Reddick-Colier Elementary.
