The Suwannee River Water Management District spent $635,000 at the end of December to buy a 6,350-acre conservation easement in Suwannee and Columbia counties.
The district buys easements to protect water resources. Under the terms of the easement sale, the property owner and district sign a perpetual agreement that gives the seller basic ownership rights, but permanently restricts alterations to the property.
District officials estimate that easements protect about 124,000 acres of water resource land.
District officials said the easement purchased from Chinquapin Farm LLC on Dec. 30 will keep the large land tract in its natural state while protecting the ground water on that property that runs into the Ichetucknee and Santa Fe rivers. More information on the district's easement program is available at www.srwmd.state.fl.us.
