Gainesville Police said they picked up a 17-year-old girl and a 22-year-old woman for prostitution late Wednesday after receiving a tip that the woman was acting as a pimp for the girl.
According to Detective Charles W. Dale, police received an anonymous tip rather than a general complaint about prostitutes working in a certain area.
Dale said an undercover officer posed as a potential client and recorded phone conversations of the officer negotiating over the price of sex acts involving the teen and the woman, according to Dale.
The woman and teen reportedly met with the undercover officer in a car at about 7 p.m. in the 2000 block of Northwest 6th St. Dale said the trio negotiated a final price and other details during another recorded conversation. Then the teen and woman were arrested. Both were charged with the misdemeanor of offering to engage in prostitution
Dale said, "I can't recall us arresting any juveniles for prostitution in forever." .
The teen's identity was not released but the woman was identified as Sarah E. Hicks, of 1715 N. E. 8th Ave. She was also charged with a felony -- procuring a minor for prostitution.
During questioning, Dale said the teen claimed she had been turning tricks for two or three months because the money was easy.
The teen and the woman were acquainted because they live near each other, Dale said, and were apparently performing the sex acts at area motels.
"This was almost like a call girl situation where there were telephoned or word-of-mouth referrals," Dale said. "We know that prostitution goes on all the time but this is the first time we are aware of a case involving a juvenile in a long, long time, if ever."
