A High Springs man with an extensive criminal history in Alachua and Marion counties was arrested early Wednesday for DUI. He was drinking from a gin bottle at the time of his arrest.
Gainesville Police said Timothy Hampton, 45, would not submit to a breath test, explaining his refusal to police by saying "because we know that I'm drunk," according to Officer Stephen Ruck.
Court records show he has refused to take the test four times previously when arrested for DUI. Court records show Hampton has been declared a habitual traffic offender and his license was most recently suspended on April 23.
Hampton was pulled over at 1:19 a.m. in the 900 block of Southwest Sixth Street for allegedly swerving in and out of traffic lanes while driving a 1979 Chevrolet.
Florida Department of Corrections records show Hampton, who has served nine prison terms since 1986 primarily for burglary and theft convictions in Alachua and Marion counties, was most recently released from prison in March 2008.
Hampton was being held at the Alachua County jail on Wednesday.
