If expectations held, University of Florida students returned to a fully heated campus Thursday.

UF's heating system broke down several weeks ago and the campus had been heated by a backup that is less effective. With temperatures dipping near record lows, UF officials advised students this week to wear jackets or sweaters to class. Broken pipes and other problems meant some buildings lost heating entirely.

The primary heating system, a turbine engine at the power plant near the Health Science Center, was running and undergoing testing Wednesday afternoon. After a glitch caused a delay, officials expected it to be fully operational by 11 p.m, according to a UF spokesman.
