Jim Funk: Get a real green machine

Combine a Christmas gift, a New Years resolution and the realization that the true green machine is not an expensive hybrid car, but a thrifty bicycle, and you’ve got transportation, healthy exercise, a weight loss program, a recreation and a way to socialize.

Got grinched over Christmas? (Maybe because there is a fancy bike ornament already hanging in your garage?) Get it down or check out the Gainesville Sun ads, Craig’s list, or the many bike shops all over town! Local bike stores offer a discount to Gainesville Cycling Club members and the GCC offers cycling groups for everyone from families to fanatics.

We live with wonderful weather in a bike friendly town with quiet streets, bike lanes, curb ramps and motorists who do a great job of giving you a wide berth while passing, especially if the cyclist is bright and visible. (Please note that motorists still need some help in not cutting off bicycles while making right turns, and cyclists could do better obeying traffic rules.)

Won’t you come join this cycling community, and have a wonderful time going green, or orange, or blue, or red, or any colorful spandex you’ve got!

Jim Funk,

Gainesville
