Weekly road report for Jan. 4

The following road work by the Florida Department of Transportation and the city of Gainesville could impact traffic this week.

Alachua County:

North Main Street - Traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed lanes on the west side of the road between University and Eighth avenues. One lane in each direction will be maintained while crews reconstruct the east side of the roadway. Sections of sidewalk are closed and pedestrians should cross Main Street at designated crosswalks only.

Northeast 23rd Avenue - Crews will be repainting the roadway lines between Waldo Road and Northeast 14th Street.

South Main Street - Traffic will be detoured around the intersection with Depot Avenue for underground utility work. Motorists will be directed to Southwest Fourth Avenue, Southwest Sixth Street, Southwest 16th Avenue and back to Main Street. Local traffic will still have access, but will be unable to cross the intersection.

Southwest 13th Street - Daytime lane closures just south of Archer Road near the new Shands parking garage to install sidewalk and brick pavers.

University Avenue - The eastbound turn lane onto N.W. 17th Street will be closed while the city of Gainesville has the local street closed for work.

U.S. 301 in Orange Heights - Possible daytime lane closures just south of State Road 26 while crews work on the roadway shoulder and in the median to build a new overpass.

West University Avenue - Nighttime lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. between 13th Street and Gale Lemerand Drive (by the O'Connell Center) for sidewalk repairs.


Depot Avenue - The roadway between Main Street and Southeast Seventh Street is closed for Gainesville Regional Utilities remediation work and city road work. Eastbound Depot Avenue traffic will be detoured to Southeast Fifth Avenue. Westbound Depot Avenue traffic will be detoured to Southeast Fifth Avenue at several cross streets. Northbound traffic on Southeast Fourth Street will be detoured to Southeast 10th Avenue.

Northeast 24th Street – Intermittent daytime road closures between Northeast Sixth Avenue and Northeast Eighth Avenue through January due to construction of drainage pipe and pond. Access to residents will be made available at all times. Residents should use caution as large trucks are entering the roadway at Northeast Eighth Avenue and Northeast 25th Street.

Northwest First Avenue – Closed at Northwest 17th Street from Dec. 22 until February.

Northwest 14th Street – Expect road closures between West University Avenue and Northwest First Avenue through Dec. 31 to facilitate building construction. During these closures the roadway will be inaccessible to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Northwest 15th Avenue – Expect daytime road closures between Northwest 34th Street and Northwest 31st Terrace through most of 2009 due to construction at Westwood Middle School. The roadway will be open at night and on weekends.

Northwest 17th Street – The roadway and sidewalks will be closed from University to just north of Northwest First Avenue from Dec. 22 until February.

South Sixth Avenue - Closed between Southwest Second Street and Southeast First Street through Dec. 31 to allow relocation of a natural gas pipeline.

Southwest Eighth Avenue Sidewalk – Expect sidewalk closure from Southwest 11th Street, east for half a block on the south side of the road through July.

Southwest 11th Street Sidewalk – Expect sidewalk closure from Southwest Eighth Avenue, south for one block on the east side of the road, through July.
