MIAMI — Miami's mayor says toys will be brought to a 6-year-old Italian tourist struck by a stray bullet while celebrating New Year's with his family.

The boy was struck in the chest early Friday, apparently by a falling bullet.

Mayor Tomas Regalado said Sunday that Andrea Fregonese remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Regalado said there are plans to bring toys to the boy Monday. He said the boy's family has been offered a furnished apartment near the hospital, meals from two restaurants and free trips around the city from a cab company.

The mayor said he hopes people "see that we care and that we're sorry."

The boy was shot hours after authorities held a news conference urging people to refrain from firing guns into the air to celebrate New Year's Eve.
