Q&A with Gator basketball point guard Erving Walker
Q: What’s something on your iPod that would surprise people?
A: I don’t know if it would surprise people, but I like a lot of Jay-Z Fabolous, Jada Kiss. Those are all New York rappers. Being here in the South now, they’ve been trying to get me onto rappers like Goochie man and stuff.
Q: Is it working?
A: I mean, it’s all right. I’m not a great fan. Before I couldn’t deal with it, but now I can deal with it.
Q: If basketball was made illegal, and you couldn’t play anymore, what would you do?
A: I don’t know. Man, that’s my life, basketball. I couldn’t even give you an answer on that. Wouldn’t even want to have to think about that. Maybe I’d try to become a lawyer or a doctor. Maybe I’d run track, because I’d definitely want to be involved in sports.
Q: What was the craziest thing that a coach said to you during recruiting?
A: I don’t want to put the coaches name out there or anything, but one guy told me that I’d be starting. They tried to tell me that at this school, the point guard was going to be going to the NBA after one year and that I would definitely be the next starter. I feel that once somebody starts telling you those promises, that it’s not true. The kid is still there now, going into his senior year. There’s no way that you can know those things.
Q: Which teammate of yours is the funniest in the locker room?
A: Vern(on) Macklin is always joking. He’ll try to put you on the spot sometimes. Kenny Kadji always jokes and clowns around.
Q: Finish this sentence: I use (blank) so much, I should be a sponsor.
A: Basketball. That’s the only thing I use every day. I’m not going a day without it.
Q: How long have you been playing?
A: Since I was 3. I used to go to the gym with my dad. He and the older guys would get together and play and I’d always go and watch. My first team was when I was 5.
