GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A pair of Asian small-clawed otters born at a north Florida zoo this spring finally have names.
Webster and Asia, the brother and sister pups, were born in April at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo. But the zoo couldn't name the otters until staff members determined what gender the animals were.
More than 1,000 name suggestions were submitted for the otters. A retired University of Florida professor came up with the name "Webster," and a Gainesville woman submitted the name "Asia" for the female pup.
Jonathan Miot, assistant director of the teaching zoo, says the zoo wanted to give the pups unique, individual names that would make sense even if they were separated.
